Hide Menu Bar in Firefox 3.6

Posted: Monday, December 28, 2009 by El Guru in Blogs, Firefox, Fx 3.6

For those needing more screen space, starting with the Beta 5 Release of Firefox 3.6, Windows users can now hide the Menu Bar. To hide the Menu Bar, right-click on an empty area in the toolbars and uncheck Menu Bar to hide. If you need to access the menu bar, simply press the ALT key and the menu bar will re-appear temporarily.

Firefox 3.5 users can also hide their Menu Bar, but will need an extension such as Personal Menu or Compact Menu 2 (note: I have not used either of these extensions so I can not say if one is better than the other.)

Thank you! I’ve installed Compact Menu 2 and I’m delighted with it. Just seems more usable than Personal Menu, and less effort to customize!

You neglected to mention the ‘Hide Menu Bar’ extension, which also has the ability to auto-hide/show the menu bar on mouse-over of the Window Title Bar (this requires the latest version – click the ‘older versions’ link and install the latest 122109 build).

I love this extension, especially on my netbook!

Oh – and the Hide Menu Bar extension works well with the TinyMenu and Tree Style Tab (stacks tabs vertically on the left) extension. I have all of my menus collapsed to one, and all of the buttons, awesome bar, etc on the Menu Bar. I also have it set to auto-show/hide, so during normal browsing, I have max vertical screen available, but a quick mouse-over of the Window Title Bar drops the Menu bar down for when I need it.

I have Firefox 3.6b5 and you cannot hide the Menubar. It doesn’t appear in the menu.

Per tfa, you don’t hide it using a menu choice, you have to right-click on an empty area in the toolbars.

Is this feature exist in firefox 3.6 linux version? I can’t find it.

I can see the new menu entry for “Menu bar”, but it doesn’t work for me: unchecking “Menu bar” doesn’t hide it! Is there something else I should do, like change something in “about:config”?

I have my address bar and history buttons inside the menu bar and hide navigation bar. So my only bar is the menu bar/address field and it is small. If I hide the menu bar (thus nothing left) and reopen firefox, the menu bar comes back and I can no longer hide it. So I have to open safemode and reset. Checking and unchecking does nothing. If I don’t put my address bar inside it, it works just fine. I suppose it isn’t safe for me to hide my address bar too because it shows security and what site I am on. But still.

There are multiple known bugs about the hide menu bar functionality. Some are fixed, some not. However, the ‘Hide Menu Bar’ addon fixes the problem (at least for me) – and also gives you the power to have the menu bar ‘auto-show’ when you mouse-over the window title bar!

The latest version for 3.6 can be found in the mozillazine support thread for the extension, in this post:

Thanks. I keep forgetting how to do this on a fresh install ;)
