Review: Abduction

Numerous times I have written about FastStone (Image Capture) and I still use the application for most of my screenshot needs. However, there is a sever limitation with FastStone as it only allows you to capture what is visible on your screen, hence the term screenshot. This can be a problem if you want to capture and entire web page and it is larger than your screen. In the case of FastStone or any other screenshot application, you would have to create multiple screenshots. There is an easier and better way with Abduction.

Abduction is a simple screenshot add-on for Firefox which allows you to capture the entire page (no matter how large) into a PNG or JPG file. Once the extension is installed, simply right-click and select Save Page as Image… from the context menu (alternatively you can also select the same option via the File menu). A new window will pop-up displaying everything that has been captured. At this point you can simply accept everything as-is, click Save and be done. Or if you only want a portion of the page, you can draw a box around the selection you want and then click Save.

Click For Larger Image

Abduction has only a couple options and are only available once you do an abduction:

  • Overlay color & Opacity- selects the color and amount of opacity Abduction will use to highlight your selection area
  • Format – save as one of these four formats

    • PNG High Quality
    • JPEG High Quality
    • JPEG Medium Quality
    • JPEG Low Quality

Abduction is about 8 KB can be downloaded here.

Edit: You can capture long screens with FastStone, see the tips from HN in the comments below.

    Hmmmm….
As a big fan of Fastone capture, I must defend it. It has both options you just mentioned AND able to capture long web pages. loot at the picture and the circled icon.

Don’t be too much “pushy” on stuff you are asked to push…. it doesn’t look too good.
