Fx 3 2007/03/06 Update

Very little to report out of today’s Firefox 3 status meeting. The latest news on Places is expect to see something (may not be fully functional) shipped with the Alpha 4 build the end of this month. Okay so this week they are saying Alpha 4 by the end of the month. But wait…last I looked Fx3/Gecko1.9 are only on Alpha 2 right now.

Okay I’m confused. So now I am wondering just when is Alpha 3 going to ship? I would expect this might be discussed in tomorrow’s Gecko 1.9 status meeting. Then I noticed something when I was checking the notes for today’s Fx 3 status meeting, the agenda for tomorrows Gecko 1.9 meeting is already posted. Taking a look at the agenda the first item under Gecko 1.9 Alpha 3 Status is “2 more weeks!” Interesting that would place Alpha 3 somewhere in the neighborhood of the 20th/21st. Then there is suppose to be an Alpha 4 at the end of the month?!

This does sort of make sense if Alpha 3 is just going to be everything that has been planed (less Places) so for that milestone. Whereas Alpha 4 is just going to for the bookmarks on Places. A bit of different way of doing the releases, but this is somewhat similar to the upcoming 1.5.0.11/2.0.0.3 “patch” builds due out very soon.

Fx 1.5.0.11 & 2.0.0.3 Details

Last night I mentioned about the upcoming release (either this week or next week) for Fx 1.5.0.11 & 2.0.0.3 builds to address some serious regressions. Here is some more detailed information about these four regressions.

  1. Bug 370136 prevents Firefox from automatically obtaining a certificate when there are two or more valid certificates for a website. This bug has been fixed
  2. Bug 371525 is a result of the change in the way password manager works in the new Fx 1.5.0.10/2.0.0.2 builds. This is regression is not a security issue, just an annoyance. If you have multiple accounts for a site, the password manager doesn’t insert any password in the password field after selecting the desired username in the username field. This bug has also been fixed.
  3. Bug 371576 is for Fx 2.0.0.2 only and is said this build causes Backbase (a set of Ajax based web user interface elements) sites to break. There was some debate as if this was limited to Mac builds and there were also some scattered reports that this affected Fx 1.5.0.10 as well. This bug has been fixed.
  4. Finally, Bug 371309 involves custom builds and prevents distributors’ to set a custom homepage because the migration wizard overwrites it. This bug was fixed late last night in time for the code freeze tonight.

Since all four bugs have been fixed in time for tonight’s code freeze, expect RC tomorrow for both versions. Since this is relatively small amount of fixes it is possible we could see Fx 1.5.0.11 & 2.0.0.3 as early as Friday (03/09) but I am thinking next Tuesday (03/13).
