[...] GetMail - Amazing how removing one button from the Firefox 2 toolbar could upset so many people. Funny thing is I never used the ‘Get Mail’ button so I didn’t understand what the big deal was. I simply switch over to Thunderbird when I had new messages. [...]

The author's link is dead, however you can still get this very useful extension!

Install from this link:

http://w2.abcoroti.com/~cattin/siteview.htm

GetMail 2.5.4 is your best bet. I think GetMail Plus 3.0 is only if you have problems with 2.5.4 launching your email client.

That link to AMO it dead. Looks like the extension has been removed.

My extension at http://codefisher.org/toolbar_button/ does have buttons to do both of these actions.

The sole reason we have not switched to Firefox 2.0 in our household
is the lack of an e-mail button/link on the menu bar. It may seem like a small thing but when you have been accessing your mail via
the toolbar since the dawn of windows it becomes second nature. It is
irksome to have to have go looking for your mail client, whatever it may be.

Yes, we see that a "GetMail" addin has been posted but I am being ask to register, why? I thought the open source community was just that, open, why do you want my e-mail address? To spam just like all the other windows programs who constanty ask you to register then
send you mountains of free or new deals, updates, etc that's why.
