Stop Automatic Image Resizing

For some odd reason Firefox likes to resize images automatically so they will “fit in the browser window”. I have found this rather annoying and was glad to discover there is an about:config tweak to prevent this. Thanks to Ryan at CybertNet Forums for this here tip:

  1. In a new tab type about:config in the address bar or open the about:config editor
  2. Copy and paste browser.enable_automatic_image_resizing into the filter field
  3. Double-click the entry to change it to false
  4. Close tab or about:config editor and changes will take effect right-away.

This tweak works with Firefox builds/versions 1.5.0.X, 2.0.0.X and 3.0a1pre. Ryan and I did a little research with our old Firefox 1.0.8 builds and we discovered it use to be a check (or uncheck) option right form the ‘Options…’ menu under the ‘Advanced’ option and ‘Browsing’ section, ‘Resize large images to fit in the browser window’. While I was looking at the options on Firefox 1.0.8, I had forgotten how long the options menu was then.

Now here is an oddity, the about:config page on Mozilla’s site claims that this is still a user specifiable option by going to “Tools → Options → Advanced → Multimedia → Resize large images to fit in the browser window”. Well, I don’t know what build/version of Firefox they are using, but there is no ‘Multimedia’ section in any of the past, current or future (3.0) builds/versions of Firefox.

It’s “Tools → Options → Advanced → GENERAL → Resize large images to fit in the browser window”. But I don’t think it works – I see images flow off the right side of the page frequently, and I have it checked.

I know this is an old post, but I’ve just found this cool blog!

I’m using Firefox 2.0.0.4 and this tweak doesn’t work with me. It was alright in my previous version though. I’m also getting a ’spell check’
function whereby mispelt text comes up underlined in red.

The option that pat describes (Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Resize images…) does not exist in Firefox 2.0.0.5 for some reason. I do remember it being there in earlier versions.

Whatever. The fix above works well. Thanks.

Fix doesn’t work for me. Firefox 2.0.0.7. Automatic resizing has only recently become a problem for me even though I’ve been through all versions since 1.0

2.0.0.7, its not working for me either. I’m not sure what triggered the behavior in the first place, it only started doing the annoying resizing very recently, I don’t remember any FF updates… I’ve been on 2.x since release. If anyone finds a solution, please post here, its driving me crazy. Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. When I was using Firefox 2-ish, there was a checkbox. I just got a new computer, installed version 3, and found that there was no option to prevent resizing. It’s much appreciated!

Nice… but now, how can I get rid of that Magnifying Glass completely?

I don’t want any resize options at all. I just want to see the full picture at all times.
